The Senior children embody what it means to be a Durlstonian - confident, kind, hard-working and not afraid to push themselves to the limit, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, when performing to a large audience or when bog running on Dartmoor!
Working within the Common Entrance curriculum, children are prepared for the future school of your choice. Specialist teachers inspire passion for their subjects and have the knowledge and expertise to deliver teaching at an exceptionally high level. A positive attitude to learning is instilled in our children, which they carry with them throughout their future educational journeys. Designated ‘Form Teachers’ are there to encourage and support the children throughout this final journey as part of the Durlston family.
Our results speak for themselves with a host of scholarships awarded each year to prestigious schools such as Canford, St Swithuns, Talbot Health and King Edwards, to name a few.
For those aiming to gain entrance to selective schools at 11 or 13, there is a comprehensive guidance and support programme available should parents wish their children to be prepared specifically for the tests. Our pupils have an exceptionally strong track record of success in ISEB pre-tests, Common Entrance Level 1, 2 and 3, Common Academic Scholarship examinations and in individual senior schools’ own examinations and scholarships.
The leadership skills that the children acquire by the age of thirteen are immense. Prefect duties, public speaking, mentoring, hosting assemblies, supporting at events and talking to current and prospective parents are all part of life in the Senior School. The confidence and self-esteem that are acquired as a result cannot to be underestimated.
Co-curricular opportunities are numerous and incorporate an exciting and greatly anticipated range of residential trips. The Year 6 camping expedition, the French trip, the ski trip, the sports tour of Jersey and the outdoor pursuits at Mount Kelly College in Devon form some key foundations of the Senior years. Regular music concerts, sporting tournaments, art exhibitions, drama productions and STEM challenges allow children to flourish in their own unique areas of strength.
Years 6 to 8 foster challenge, ambition and excellence, preparing children for the future.
A visit to the Senior common room will show you children of whom we are very proud - each and every single one. We know these children as individuals, we know what motivates and inspires them, we know their little worries, and what they aspire to. As a result, we can teach them in a personalised way, allowing them to learn without limits and to truly fulfil their potential.
