Forest School is eagerly anticipated. As wellies and waterproofs are put on, everybody knows that adventures await! The Den really comes to life with a huge range of activities to stimulate and promote learning. Surely every Durlston family is the proud owner of a wooden disc, carefully sawn, drilled and decorated by their child?
The open fire is a constant source of joy as children learn to respect the fire and also appreciate it as a source of heat – and therefore hot chocolate! Other outdoor cooking creations have included pizza, sourdough bread and popcorn, to name a few.
It is wonderful to see the attitudes to learning which are developed outside. Shrieks of excitement can be heard when a child who has persisted for weeks in trying to create a spark with the flint and steel finally achieves this! Forest School teaches the children that things which seem difficult or impossible at first can be achieved. Over and again, they bring this mind-set back into the classroom to deal with tricky academic challenges.
