School Council Report 2008-9

In September, class elections took place and the school councillors for the year were announced as:

3G Benedict Kosarski-Lisk, 3W Madeleine Davies, 4J Sadie Hopkins, 4L Joseph Case, 5C Beatrice Skene, 5E Zoe Merry, 6P Angus Huntington, 6V Harry Richardson, 7Ca Tayler Lightbourn, 7Co Harrison Hughes, 8F Emma Le Good, 8R Jake Ring.

The school council gathered at least once a term to discuss initiatives, suggestions and ideas that had been put forward by pupils at Durlston. This year provided the usual wide variety of excellent proposals.

In September, the ‘My Durlston’s Days’ record book, suggested and designed the previous year, was successfully introduced to the school and will hopefully become a treasured memento of time spent at the school.

The first meeting came in November and all classes had thought of interesting and unusual ideas, however the year 3 suggestion of a zip wire had, tempting as it was, to be turned down! There were several noteworthy changes as a result of the meeting:

♦ At lunchtime, it was agreed that hot puddings could be taken from the serving area after finishing main course;
♦badminton club was re-introduced by Mr. Chesters;
♦ a rough book or jotter was made available for pupils; radio-controlled clocks were purchased;
♦ a window was built into the boot room door to improve visibility and a horizontal climbing wall, funded by the parents’ association, was attached to the squash court wall.

All ideas initiated by the pupils of Durlston.

Later meetings brought up, amongst other things, the need for hairdryers and mirrors in the boys’ changing room (apparently!), the suggestion of a pet day (ever popular) and a remote control car club.

We look forward to following up these and other suggestions next year.
