Learning Support Unit (LSU)

The learning Support Unit has been an integral part of Durlston Court School for more than fifteen years years, staffed by a dedicated and highly qualified team.

Situated in a special classroom in the main part of the school, it offers support to children who may be struggling with literacy, numeracy and mild specific learning difficulties.

The Unit provides extra help, in small groups, for maths and spelling
reinforcement in Years 3, 4 and 5 both in, and sometimes out of the classroom.

Individual lessons in Maths and Literacy are arranged after consulation with parents, and are timetabled to fit in with both the child’s teachers and, wherever possible, parents’ wishes. In Maths, the aim is to improve the child’s understanding and to develop confidence, in ways which are specifically adapted to meet the learning needs of the pupil. Lessons in literacy are tailor made to the individual pupils needs. Focussing on reading, comprehension and spelling, each using a variety of multi-sensory
programmes.

The LSU also works closely with children who may be going through a temporary crisis, due to illness, friendship or family problems etc. These children are encouraged to pop into the Unit in order to talk to someone or just sit quietly. Our aim is to ensure that Durlston Court School is a happy experience for all children.
