Welcome to the Library in the Hayward Centre

The new library in the Hayward Centre is a wonderful resource. Housing around 5,000 books, the space is well used for reading, studying, listening to stories, playing games and attending clubs.   Well-loved, and usually a hubbub of activity, Quiet Tuesdays and Thursdays ensure a time purely for studying and reading; the opportunity to undertake research, revise or get ahead with homework.

Books for our older children are housed separately on a mezzanine level, allowing us to extend the range and subject matter available to Years 7 and 8.  Younger and developing readers have an extensive choice of books on the ground floor, where a developing non-fiction range is held.  We also make full use of technology with computers, iPods, audiobooks, a Kindle and a range of DVDs available.

Children in Years 3-7 have timetabled lessons in the library.  In these sessions, we  focus on different aspects of literature and seek to inspire children to experiment with reading. Generally the library is open at break and lunchtime every day. All pupils in the senior school have the opportunity to change their books quickly using a computerised system, which also allows us to understand their reading preferences.

Research shows that children across the ability range who read achieve more at every stage of their education: our role is to help to ignite a passion for reading.
