Learning Support Unit (LSU)

The Learning Support Unit has been an integral part of Durlston Court School for many years, staffed by a dedicated and highly qualified team.
Now centrally located in two special classrooms in the new Hayward Centre, known as the Lighthouse, it offers support to children who may be experiencing difficulties with literacy and numeracy.
The Department also provides extra help, in small groups, for spelling reinforcement in Years 3, 4 and 5.
Individual lessons are arranged after consultation with parents, and are timetabled to fit in with both the child’s teachers and, wherever possible, parents’ wishes. Lessons in literacy are tailor made to the individual pupil's needs. Focussing on reading, comprehension and spelling, each using a variety of multi-sensory programmes.
The LSU also works closely with children who may be going through a temporary crisis, due to illness, friendship or family problems etc. These children are encouraged to pop into the Unit in order to talk to someone or just sit quietly. Our aim is to ensure that Durlston Court School is a happy experience for all children.
LSU encourages parents to discuss their concerns with specially arranged meetings designed to explore the issues and provide reasurrance. It stimulates a partnership between home and the school.
Touch-typing courses are also run as a way of encouraging and developing skills and inspiring confidence.
