Instrumental Music

The school has a varied team of specialist instrumental teachers who offer tuition in the following instruments:

violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, horn, tuba, percussion, recorder, piano and organ. A large proportion of pupils at Durlston take advantage of this opportunity.
Pupils are prepared for Associated Board examinations for which the school is a centre. Theory of Music is taught to all pupils but those needing more than a general knowledge are encouraged to have theory lessons.

All pupils are encouraged to play with others in the various ensembles which the school provides. We have an Orchestra, Senior Enseble, String Group, Brass Group, 2 Handbell Teams and Recorder ensembles and a percussion Group.

The school has a limited stock of instruments available for hire for beginners. However it is hoped that once a pupil shows an aptitude for an instrument they will purchase their own.

Instrumental lessons are taught on the basis of a weekly lesson (generally 30 minutes) throughout the term. In addition, Year 3 pupils have alternating group lessons ie the violin and recorder.

All pupils learning orchestral instruments are encouraged to play with others in the various ensembles which the school provides. We have an Orchestra, Senior Ensemble, String Group, Brass Group, 2 Handbell Teams and Recorder ensembles and a percussion Group.
