These elements use primary source material. They are tested in order to determine the pupils levels of:
comprehension; ability to compare sources of evidence; provenance, primary/secondary evidence; skills of deduction/intepretation/reliability; comparison of sources; the chroniclers; bias.
Written interpretation (the traditional essay) forms the 2nd strand. General topics allow the possibility of pupils demonstrating individuality/independent study and enquiry.
