1066 (and all that)

History in the Senior School Years 6-8

In History we follow the 2008 Common Entrance syllabus which is based on key stage 3 of the National Curriculum.

In year 6 the lesson is one hour per week; in years 7 and 8 the time allocated is 90 minutes per week.

In history we actively encourage the acquisition and application of high order language skills especially oral expression and extending the use of English.

Aims:
• To stimulate pupils curiosity about the way of life of people living in the past;
• To develop pupils’ understanding of their own and others’ inheritance;
• To enable pupils to consider the ways in which the past influences the present;
• To learn facts, acquire vital skills and use source material to gain evidence.

Key elements of the syllabus 1066-1500:

♦1st Crusade   ♦Edward I    ♦King John   ♦Women in Medieval Society   ♦Richard I  ♦Black Death 1348.

These elements use primary source material. They are tested in order to determine the pupils levels of:

comprehension; ability to compare sources of evidence; provenance, primary/secondary evidence; skills of deduction/intepretation/reliability; comparison of sources; the chroniclers; bias.

Written interpretation (the traditional essay) forms the 2nd strand. General topics allow the possibility of pupils demonstrating individuality/independent study and enquiry.
