Facilities

The department is excellently resourced; the laboratory itself (used by pupils from Year 5 upwards) is only in its 5th year.

Equipped with fixed work-benches down both sides, pupils have an up-to-date and safe environment in which to participate in practical work. The attached Preparation Room allows glassware, chemicals and other apparatus to be conveniently yet safely stored.

Resources
The PC-projector system (with DVD/video & hi-fi) enables the projection of worksheets and web-pages on a screen big enough to be seen clearly throughout the laboratory and, with the laboratory ‘blacked-out’ has the capability to show scientific programmes in near-cinema conditions.

Traditional paper-based resources have not been neglected; over the past 3 years the department has purchased the newly published Longman ‘Exploring Science’ textbooks for Years 3-6. These, combined with the accompanying resource packs, revision material and ‘levelled’ end-of-unit tests, have proved tremendously popular with students and parents alike. Longman 11-14 Biology, Chemistry & Physics textbooks are in use in Years 7 & 8 (the Exploring Science series for those year-groups, whilst generally adequate, did not provide adequate depth and challenge for the more able students). Parents, armed with copies of these resources at home, comment that they feel able for the first time to help their sons and daughters with homework and revision!
