Design Technology
With the recently refurbished Design & Technology room above the Art Room new initiatives have been introduced this year to raise the profile of Design & Technology at Durlston Court. Mr. Collard has introduced a Senior Design & Technology Club, producing exciting new projects for the seniors. At the beginning of March The Head of Design & Technology at Bryanston School, along with two of his pupils, visited the department to set our Year 6’s a challenge.
Working in small groups, and against the clock, our pupils had to build a working catapult to fire a ball across the room. All pupils who participated had a great time and the winners, firing from one end of the room to the other. The winners and all those competing each received a prize for their efforts.
In June 2006, to start the Year 8 Leavers’ Programme, the whole morning was given over to a Design & Technology challenge. Working in groups of three, Year 8 pupils had to use newspaper and paper tape only to create strong triangular structures - later to be assembled into one large structure out in the playground. All groups worked extremely well to produce their individual structures, final assembly proved to be more difficult than we thought! Chocolate medals for the team who completed the most structures were awarded to Rachel Croker, Lucy Kenny and Alexander Macey-Dare.
