Design Technology

Design & Technology has a major role to play in developing the lively, enquiring minds needed to cope with the demands of the 21st century.  The carefully structured contextual involvement with a range of tools and materials offers Durlston pupils enjoyment, excitement and expectation as ‘designers and makers’.

‘Tell me and I forget – show me and I may remember – let me do it and I learn’.  Learning through making works. Prue Leath

This quote underpins Design & Technology  teaching at Durlston Court.  Our pupils enjoy the inherent problem-solving as well as the satisfaction of producing objects with their own hands.

As well as timetabled lessons of Design & Technology senior pupils may also opt for a Design & Technology Club to further their interest.   Every summer our Year 8’s take up  a Design & Technology challenge set within school and particularly enjoy working in small groups for a whole morning, competing for prizes.

Equally enthusiastic are our Year 5’s in making and racing their model cars.

Educational visits are a valuable part of the curriculum – seeing Design & Technology in action.

Year 6 currently make an annual visit to Hollycombe Steam Park as part of their project on ‘Fairgrounds’ and combine learning with all the fun of the fair.

With the recently refurbished Design & Technology room above the Art Room new initiatives have been introduced to raise the profile of Design & Technology at Durlston Court
