Job Description - Caretaker

Job Summary
The School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, reliable and practical Caretaker.  The main duties of the Caretaker include security, building maintenance, minibus maintenance, setting-up and clearing away for meetings and events, and out-of-hours emergency contact.

The post is residential and a 2 bedroom cottage within the school grounds is provided with the post.

Working hours are typically 37 hours a week, are flexible to accommodate the School timetable and calendar, and will include some early mornings, evenings and weekends.  The balance of tasks will vary between term time and school holidays.  Annual leave of 22 days is to be taken during school holidays.

Knowledge and Experience
The following would be desirable:

♦  understanding of safe working practices
♦  understanding of Health & Safety requirements
♦  understanding of building construction
♦  ability to interpret technical information
♦  experience of building repairs
♦  experience of vehicle maintenance

Skills and qualities
Our Caretaker will need to be:

♦  Responsible, honest and reliable
♦  A good verbal communicator
♦  Polite and courteous
♦  Practical and handy, with an interest in DIY
♦  Well organised and able to prioritise own work
♦  Able to work alone or with others
♦  Calm in an emergency
♦  Prepared to get up early and sometimes work late
♦  Flexible and enjoy a varied routine
♦  Physically fit

Conditions
The position will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced CRB check, and clean driving license. Reports to: The Bursar. Will work in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager, Housekeeper and other members of staff.

Main Activities:

SECURITY
Duties include:

♦  Checking that the School buildings and grounds are secure
♦  Opening and locking up of School premises
♦  Understanding School emergency procedures
♦  Assisting with tests of emergency procedures and equipment
♦  Dealing with emergencies on site in accordance with School emergency procedures
♦  Reporting breaches of security and associated damage to the Headmaster and/or Police as appropriate

MAINTENANCE
Specific tasks will be scheduled in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager and may include:

♦  Understanding School fire safety regulations and Health and Safety regulations ♦  Regular inspection of services
♦  Regular readings of utility meters, fuel gauges, milometers
♦  Carrying out minor repairs to premises and equipment
♦  Purchasing materials
♦  Liaising with contractors

MINIBUSES
For the schools fleet of minibuses (currently 6):

♦  Carry out weekly routine maintenance checks
♦  Organise MOT, servicing and licensing
♦  Clean interior and exterior weekly
♦  Provide emergency cover for minibus drivers

CLEANING
Specific tasks will be scheduled in conjunction with the Housekeeper and may include:

♦  Making sure premises are clean and tidy at times when Housekeeping staff are not on duty
♦  Replacing consumables
♦  Ensuring rubbish is collected and taken away
♦  Emergency cleaning, including human deposits

OTHER DUTIES
Other duties include:

♦  Arranging furniture and equipment for School and Parents’ Association and any other meetings / events and clearing away afterwards
♦  Storing equipment and supplies safely
♦  Handling of deliveries and post
♦  Cover for colleagues in the event of sickness or other absences
♦  Any other task as may from time to time be reasonably directed
